PSA: My Ball Python Won’t Eat!

One of the most commonly asked reptile care and husbandry questions has to do with when your snake, or other reptile decides to stop eating. Some species especially, such as ball pythons, are well-known for these fasting, or hunger strikes, but this should not necessarily be cause for alarm, at least in many cases and may actually be normal. This very common issue may be related to incorrect husbandry, errors in husbandry, potential parasites or illnesses, the species, or sometimes other factors.

This is one reason why education and research beforehand should always be important when choosing or considering any particular species as a pet and understanding that species' diet and other natural behaviors which help lead to avoiding these feeding related issues. Check out our article on what to do when your snake or other reptile decides to stop eating, as well as this useful care sheet from Zilla Products on ball pythons to learn more about what to expect beforehand!
